Duet of national instrument kanklės by Aistė Bružaitė ir Jolita Sidorenkaitė
Aistė Bružaitė and Jolita Matkienė established their kankles duo on 2001, at the time they were studying at Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, in the kankles class of Prof. L.Naikelienė. Young, charming and talented musicians playing the Lithuanian national instrument – kankles have a non-folkloric and unconventional attitude towards it, as they play interpretations of classical and popular music (pop-rock-jazz).
In 1998, having graduated from the 2nd Music School in Šiauliai, Jolita continued studying subtleties of music at Šiauliai Conservatoire. In 2007, she completed master studies at Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, where she has gained the qualification of kankles performer and pedagogue. She is a laureate of J.Švedas national contests and the 2nd International Contest of Folk String Instruments in Pskov (Russia). Since 2003, she has been playing in the ensemble ‘Basom’. In 2007, Jolita was invited to conduct at Lithuanian Song Festival, the Afternoon with Kankles.
Aistė was born in 1983, in Skuodas. In 1998, she graduated from Skuodas School of Art (teacher – Ms. Seva Kazankovienė) and continued studies of music at S.Šimkus Conservatoire in Klaipėda (lecturer – V.Zelenienė). In 2001 through 2007, she was studying at Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (the class of Prof. Lina Naikelienė). She is a participant of J.Švedas national contests (V, VI, VII – laureate), and laureate of the 1st and the 2nd International Contests of Folk String Instruments in Pskov (Russia). Since 2003, she has been playing in the ensemble ‘Vaivora’.
The duo has performed in Estonia, Latvia, Russia, and Poland. In 2001 and 2003 they won first places at the international festival-contest in Pskov. In 2004, they took part in the First Pranas Stepulis Contest of Chamber Folk Music Ensembles and won the first place there. Their repertoire consists of music written by both Lithuanian and foreign composers. The young musicians perform with ensembles of various composition and as soloists. They cooperate actively with Lithuanian composers, perform their new premiere works.
